Great Canadians

Canada is the 2nd largest country in the world. Only Russia has more land mass. But it is only the 39th most populated country. Sudan, Algeria and Colombia have more people than Canada. Germany has more than twice as many people. And yet, despite our small numbers, Canadians have accomplished much.

One of our writers teaches French at a Montessori school. The children are 3 to 5 years old. African Canadian kids, Chinese, Korean, South Asian, Russian, special needs, Middle Eastern, Filipino, Spanish. You name it. And no one sees anyone as different. They are all friends. It is a beautiful thing, he says. He believes this is something special about Canada. I’m not sure it happens as much in other countries. Canada is very special in this way. If the whole world could just see things the way these children do, I can only imagine what we could accomplish.

Actors and Actresses

Actresses include Ellen Page, Margot Kidder, Rachel McAdams, Anna Paquin, Sandra Oh, Evangeline Lilly, Rae Don Chong, Neve Campbell, Kim Cattrall, Mary Pickford and Carrie Ann Moss. Male actors include Raymond Burr, William Shatner, Hayden Christiansen, Graham Greene, Lorne Greene Eric McCormack, Christopher Plummer, Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling, and Donald Sutherland.

Sports

The five Best hockey players ever are all Canadian. Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Mario Lemieux, Rocket Richard, and Bobby Orr are all proud Canadians.

Haley Wickenheiser is commonly referred to as the greatest female hockey player of all time. John Naesmith Invented basketball, and Steve Nash is a 2 time MVP in the NBA and coach for the New York nets, the odds on favourite to win the championship next year. In tennis, Bianca Andreescu beat Serena Williams to win the US Open in 2019 and Mike Weir won the Masters in golf in 2003.

Canada has often had the fastest man on the planet. Donovan Bailey won Gold in 1996 and most recently Andre De Grasse at the 2020 Olympics in Japan.
This year we also won the decathlon for the 1st time. It was won by Damian Warner. The greatest female soccer player of all time is Christine Sinclair, the captain of the gold medal-winning women’s soccer team at the Olympics. They are the current world champions.

Music

This is where we really shine. Some of the world’s most famous singers are Canadian. Joni Mitchell, Avril Lavigne, Sara McLaughlin, Shawn Mendez, Neil Young, Feist, Joan Arden, Tom Cochran, Alana Miles, Anne Murray, Celine Dion, K.D. Lang, Alanis Morissette, Shania Twain, Bryan Adams, Paul Anka, Michael Buble, Leonard Cohen, Jeff Healey, Burton Cummings, Gordon Downie, Diana Crawl, Bruce Coburn and Alissia Cara.

Not to mention our three giant superstars right now, Drake, The Weekend, and Justin Bieber. When it comes to music, Canadians have a lot to be proud of.

Comedians

Female comics include Catherine O’Hara, Samantha Bee, And Lilly Singh. Male comedians are tough to beat. They include Russell Peters, Michael J. Fox, Dan Aykroyd, Jim Carrey, John Candy, Leslie Nielsen, Eugene Levi, Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Howie Mandel, Seth Rogan, and Michael Cera.

Medicine

Sir Frederick Banting is the Canadian icon behind insulin, what’s been dubbed one of the most important medical discoveries of the 20th century. Cystic fibrosis is a common genetic disease affecting children and adults and its genes were discovered right out of Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children by Dr. Lap-Chee Tsui. His work has been heralded as one of the most significant breakthroughs in human
genetics. Doctor Wilfred Bigelow pioneered open-heart surgery in the 1950s and two Canadians, doctors, James Till and doctor Ernest
McCulloch discovered transplantable stem cells at the Ontario cancer institute in Toronto.◆
